The Haifa Sewage Treatment Plant was first treatment plant to be built in Israel. Originally built in the early 1960's to serve a population of 255,000 people, it was designed for a dual stage trickling filter process to treat a sewage flow of 30,000 m3/day (10 million m3/year).
The Sewerage Association provides 11 municipalities and other regional entities in the Greater Haifa Region with assorted sewage treatment services including sewage treatment plant operation and municipal/industrial sewage quality control. The population served is expected to reach 800,000 not long after the year 2000, and is spread over an area of more then 100 square kilometers
